My friend Dee Kirkby recently launched a
series of books for children. Here she is explaining why she did it:
I did a lot of outreach work into schools this year as part of my Writer in Residence post and despite a lifelong dream of writing for children I had never quite managed to do it - mostly due to fear of failure, I think. Anyway, at each school I visited the children would ask me to read them something I had written, and I felt a bit of a fraud that I was visiting schools without writing anything for children - especially when I was teaching them creative writing while I was there! So, one morning I wrote a short story - The Box of Broken Things and took it on the school visit that day. The children loved it and when my son read it he wanted to know what happened next. It was only supposed to be a short story but I wrote more for him and it grew into Realand, and then book 2, Raffie Island, asked to be written, swiftly followed by Queendom (which is only a couple of chapters away from being finished) which will, in turn, be followed by book 4, Hoardland.
My daughter Martha has read the first book and here’s what she thinks:
A boy called Craig is given a toy crab by Santa and is told to give it to either Max or Lucy but Max and Lucy haven’t been born yet. Anyway it turns out that the crab is actually magic and opens up doors to other worlds. When Max and Lucy finally get the crab years later it is the start of a great adventure.
I liked it because it was exciting and unpredictable and it really didn’t take me too long to read. I would recommend it to boys or girls from about 7 and up.
The reason I am telling you all this is because Realand is free for the next few days. If you have someone in your house who might like it, especially a reluctant reader, then why not download it while it won’t cost you anything? Don't hang about though as it won't be free for long.
You can download Realand for your Kindle from Amazon UK, US and pretty much all other territories.
Thank you Scott, Martha, and all of you who have downloaded a copy of Realand / shared this post on Twitter and Facebook.

Hi Maddy, thank you. The link to the book is in the last sentence, just click on UK or US or go to the Amazon store online in the country you live in and enter Realand in the search engine.
