I'm guessing there's a Murakami in the mix, no? Columbia's gotta be Garcia Marquez. And from Russia maybe Andrey Kurkov?

Very good guesses, Mr Footman, but they are all incorrect.

Better luck next time.

My guess for the translated South African novel would be 'The Book of Happenstance' if only because I suspect there aren't too many translated novels from this market.

Not a bad guess there Matthew!

One You May Have Missed

  • Ian Holding: Unfeeling

    Ian Holding: Unfeeling
Unforgettable novel told from the point of view of the son of a white Zimbabwean farmer whose land is reclaimed by an armed mob. I thought it was an oustanding debut and am surprised the author didn't go on to bigger and better things.

Big Mouth at the Movies

  • : Guardians of the Galaxy

    Guardians of the Galaxy
Good fun, I thought. Not the best film in the world but a cut above the usual superhero stuff. (****)

  • : The Tale Of The Princess Kaguya

The Tale Of The Princess Kaguya
Unlike any animation I have seen. Quite stunning. (****)

  • : The Killer Inside Me

    The Killer Inside Me
Odd movie. Doesn't really work. (***)

  • : Gone Girl

    Gone Girl
Pretty good, I thought, but not amazing. I had already read the book so perhaps the lack of surprise hindered things a bit. (***)

  • : The Lunchbox

    The Lunchbox
An absolute delight. Beautifully acted. Loved this. (****)

  • : Atomised

    Atomised
So much better than the book. (****)

  • : 20,000 Days on Earth

    20,000 Days on Earth
Watched this for a second time. Just as good. (****)

  • : Le Mepris

    Le Mepris
Brigitte Bardot, Jack Palance, Michel Piccoli and Fritz Lang star in a beautifully shot but terribly pretentious movie. Palance is awful throughout. (**)

  • : Labor Day

    Labor Day
Was this a box office flop? I think it might have been. Shame, it was very good. (****)
