I have the pleasure of hosting a fiction-in-translation event at the Bath Literature Festival next month.
Around the World in 10 Books will feature myself alongside Sam Baker and Maureen Freely. Sam is a novelist, reviewer and journalist who used to be the editor of Red magazine. Maureen is a novelist and translator, most notably of the work of Orhan Pamuk. Together we will attempt to travel the world vicariously through some of our favourite books.
Each of us has chosen three favourite translated novels which we will share with the audience. I shall not reveal which novels they are until the big day but I can say that they come from Turkey, Japan, Faroe Islands, France, Denmark, South Africa, Columbia, India and Russia. Feel free to guess.
In addition, we will each be coming along with a wildcard and the audience will get to vote for which of these makes the final selection.
It will be very much a whistlestop tour of the globe and we'll only have a few minutes to enthuse about each book but I hope we will turn our audience onto some novels they may not otherwise have read. I suspect it will be a lot of fun, if a tad shambolic.
Did I say shambolic? I meant slick and professional.
It all kicks off at 6.15pm on Monday 3rd March. You can book tickets here.
